Exacerbating these problems, Pyper, on no fewer than three occasions, has his protagonist note his life's similarity to a novel, lamenting that it cannot be counted on to conform to the rules of a thriller. He manages to maintain a fair amount of tension, but the narrative is populated by stock characters and often strains credibility. Review 1: The premise is solid – a grieving single parent joins a writing circle, and is drawn into murderous, possibly supernatural intrigue involving a killer that seems to have stepped out a fellow writer's story – but Pyper is an inconsistent prose stylist who thinks himself too clever by half. ![]()
